Although the current capital of the island, Douglas, has a great deal to offer you and your family during your Manx trip, the ancient capital of Castletown is well worth a visit as well.

In particular Cashtal Rosien, or Castle Rushen, which is still in use as a court-house and museum, is among the best examples of medieval castles on the British Isles. Originally thought to have been constructed in the late 12th and early 13th centuries the castle has been continuously developed by rulers since then, leading to distinctive areas of architecture over the site.

The castle became a Manx National Heritage site in 1988 and opened in 1991 as the first major Manx heritage site, before being run as a museum as it is today and depicting the history of the Kings and Lords of Mann

During March to October when the castle is open all the available rooms have signs detailing their history as well as exhibitions including a medieval kitchen where authentic food is provided on special occasions.

As well as Castle Rushen, Castletown has a range of other sites for you to visit during your trip including the Heritage sites of the Nautical Museum, old Grammar School and Old House of Keys if you want to continue your historical journey.

Further information can be found on the Manx National Heritage website.
